Analect 15:38

The Master said “In serving your ruler. You should be concerned about your service to him first: your compensation for the work should be a secondary”.

I will discuss what I how I understood the analects. I understood it as thinking about wether the outcome of your service is good or not, or thiking how can you serve well other first before thinking what is the reward for the work that you have done. Anyone of us, when doing a work or service, we are very concern about the outcome of our service or the feedback of the person we give the service because we want a good feedback first. Compensation must be secondary because your compensation will be based on the quality of the service that you have done. For example, as a student, if a professor gives a work or project, we are much really concern on how we can make the project or given work pleasing or correct for the professor because when the project or given work is made well or when you pleased your professor with your given work or project, you know that the professor will merit you high grade or score for the quality or goodness of your work. Even just like the helpers that work on homes, they listen and do well the given task of the person or family who hired them because they want to prove to the person who hired them that they are doing or performing well on the given task or work for them to be loved and for them to receive high salary from the person who hired them. Anyone should be concern on how they will do the work or service correctly before compensating.
