Analects 4:4

Analects 4:4
Confucius said “If you are really committed to humaneness, you will have no evil in you”

I interpret it that being humane means being good and being good means having no evil in you. Evil has no space in a person who is humane, because being humane means being courteous, generous, honest, persistent and kind. If you are courteous means you are good to others and being good to others means being arrogant is gone in you. If you are generous means being good to others and being good to others means being bad is gone in you. If you are honest means you are sincere and if you are sincere means insincerity is gone in you. If you are persistent means you are determined and if you are determined means laziness and irresoluteness are gone in you. If you are kind means you are good-hearted and if you are good-hearted means being unkind is gone in you. So overall, being humane is really mean having no evil in you because the characteristics of being humane erased all the negative characteristics which are evil.

Synthesis Paper 2

What is philosophy as demonstrated in Ancient Chinese Philosophy by Confucius in the way he lays down the assumption of the solution to the Philosophical problem?

The philosophy of Confucius in the way he lays down the assumption of the solution to the Philosophical problem is Moral Philosophy. We can see Moral philosophy in each of the solutions he lays down. To strengthen my idea about the philosophy in the way he lays down the solution to the philosophical problem, we must first, one-by-one discuss each solution. We will discuss first, The Tao as a Social-Moral Way. In Tao, there are loyalty, mercy and humaneness. A superior man is devoted to the fundamentals or the root and when the root is firmly established, the moral law will grow. In analects 1:11 Confucius said, “When a man’s father is alive, look at the bent of his will. When his father is dead, look at his conduct. If for three years [of mourning] he does change from the way of his father, he may be called filial.” It is just mean that when a child is practiced by his father and still continues the practiced that is taught to him/her even his father is dead, he is loyal to what his father taught his and everyone can said that he/she love and respects his parents. And loving and respecting your parents is just the right thing to do.

Second is the Importance of Tradition. In the Importance of Tradition, one must follow what the rightful tradition is before and must not change it when he/she thinks that it will be bad when he/she changes it. If one follows what is morally good tradition. He/she will learn something from it. And when one is following the tradition, his/her ancestors will be delightful of him/her. And following the tradition is just the right thing to do.
Third is the Basic Goodness and Intelligence. It is said that man is good in nature and only becomes bad when presented with many bad things but he/she will find the light and return to goodness.  Confucius said that “In education, there should be no class distinction.” For me, it just means that everyone must have the chance to learn because everyone has the capability to learn and develop it. One must not be deprived from education because he just can’t afford it but he/she must be educated because you don’t know what he/she has to offer or he/she might be really intelligent. If one is eager to learn, one must be educate with many good things around him/her.

The fourth one is the Development of Chun Tzu. Confucius said, “The superior man understands righteousness; the inferior man understands profit. It means that a superior man is always fro what is right while the inferior man always do what will benefit him/her even he steps down to someone. Confucius said, “The superior man understands the higher things [moral principle]; the inferior man understands the lower principle [profit]. It just still means that a superior man is always want what is good and always do what is good while the superior man always thinks what is the good only for himself even it hurts someone. When one is educated with what is morally good or do things with conscience he/she will just to what is good. The Tao as Social-Moral Way, the Importance of Tradition, Basic Goodness and Intelligence and the Development of the Chun Tzu runs down to that one philosophy, and that philosophy is Moral Philosophy. Therefore, the philosophy as demonstrated in Ancient Chine philosophy by Confucius in the way he lays down the solution to the philosophical problem is Moral philosophy.

Analects 3:3

Analects 3:3
Confucius said “If a man has no humaneness what can his propriety be like? If a man has no humaneness, what can his music be like?”
[Comment] since humaneness is the essence of all positive human attributes, without it, how they can truly operate.

I will interpret it as “if a man has no goodness, what can his nature be like?” If a man has no goodness in him, he will not be loved by others because his attitude towards others is not good. If his nature is not good, he will never have harmony in his life. Just like in the other sentence that states the question, if a man has no humaneness, what can his music be like, as I can understand, music is the reflection of what a man feel and an expression of the behavior of man. If a man has no humaneness, his music will not be harmonious and good to hear and he will just construct or make a music that has no harmony or rhythm. Unlike when you have humaneness in you, it will reflect in your music and it will create a harmonious music out of it.

Analects 17:6

Analects 17:6
Tzu Chang asked Confucius about humaneness. Confucius said, “If you can practice these five things with all the people, you can be called humane.
Tzu Chang asked what they were. Confucius said, “Courtesy, generosity, honesty, persistence, and kindness. If you are courteous, you will not be disrespected; if you are generous, you will gain everything. If you are honest, people will rely on you. If you are persistent, you will get result. If you are kind, you can employ people.”

I will interpret what Confucius said about the quality of being humane in a simple yet meaningful way because its meaning is already well said. If you are courteous, you will not be disrespected. It means that if you are respectful to others, they will also respect you with all their heart because respect begets respect, unlike when you will not respect others, they will not also treat you with respect. If you are generous, you will gain everything. It means that if you are generous with others, they will also show their generosity to you. For example, when you give material things or other things to others, when the people you showed generosity have their own resources, without saying they will also give you things that they have. If you are honest, people will rely on you. It means that if you are honest, people will always listen and believe to what you will say or said because you showed honesty to them. If you are persistent, you will get result. It means that, if you will strive and work hard for a thing or a goal you want to finish, you will eventually get it. For example, when you will study hard and undergo sleepless nights because of studying about the subject or for the exam, you will get a good result because of persistency. If you are kind, you can employ people. It means that if you are kind to others, people will also show their kindness to you and they will allow themselves to you because they know that you will be kind to them.

Analects 2:6

Analects 2:6
Confucius said, “The main concern of your parents is about you health”.

It certainly means that when we are separated from our parents for long periods of time, we can set their mind at ease by letting them know we are in good health. Parents are very much in pain or worries when they know that you in a bad condition. Parents will do anything for you to become well and your requests will be granted and will do anything to make you comfortable or at ease. When you let your parents know that you are in good condition, you’re actually giving them comfort at the same time.

Analects 14:24

Analects 14:24
The Master said “The ancient scholars studied for their own improvement. Modern scholars study to impress others”

As I have understood from these analects, ancient scholars are the past scholars who work hard for years to master their chosen craft and they work hard to improve their works. Modern scholars are the present scholars who do work to impress others. Some students for example, are the modern scholars. Some students studies to impress their parents, they memorize things to pass quizzes or exams, they memorize things without putting it in the heart, so after the exam or quiz, the learning that they have studied are gone, unlike when you study with heart and passion, the learning that you have memorize and studied will remain in you forever and you can apply it. Another example are the writers or our writers in the present time, writers on our present time are writing different and many irrelevant articles, they write articles or work to show that they have done something to impress others. Past writers are the writers who write with passion and dedicated with their craft to improve their skill and they have undergone many difficulties to improve themselves and their works, unlike our modern writers, they just write to impress others.

Revised Prelim Synthesis Paper 1

What is Philosophy by Confucius in the way he perceives the philosophical problem?
The Correct Way is the Philosophy by Confucius in the way he perceives the philosophical problem.

Lost of the Way is the problem that Confucius perceives.  He sees lost of the way as the main philosophical problem because things that are should in its place or position are not anymore on its proper position. The answer to the problem is when the things are on its proper way or position. I will give the Analects 13:3 as an example to strengthen my idea ‘If names are not rectified, then language will not be in accord with truth, then things cannot be accomplished. If things cannot be accomplished, then ceremonies and music will not flourish. If ceremonies and music will not flourish, then punishment will not be just. If punishments are not just, then the people will not know how to move hand and foot.’ But when things are on its correct way or if things flow on its proper way then things will be done properly and there will be no social disorder. Therefore, Correct Way is the Philosophy by Confucius in the way he perceives the philosophical problem.

Analect 15:31

Analect 15:31
The Master said “ I have spent a whole day without eating and a whole night without sleeping in order to think-but I got nothing out of it. Thinking cannot compare studying.

As I can understand from this analect, thinking and studying is not comparable. You can think of many things but it will remain as idea when you will not do an action. For example, as a student, all of us can think of a certain topic of a certain subject, you can think of it as long as you want but without doing a action, you cannot create or generate an output from it and it will remain as it is. Another example is when you are given an assigned question by the teacher, you can think of the question all night but as long as you do not study or do some actions for you to solve it, it will remain as an unsolved question. Studying is really not comparable with thinking because studying is doing an action for answering or solving a question. For example, as a student, when you are given a topic or assigned work, you will automatically study or research about the given topic or assigned work by the teacher. Studying has a result. Like when you are took an exam, when you studied well, you know that you can get a high score that correspond a high grade. Studying can give a good result than thinking alone.
